Finding Mara: A Story of Connection and Companionship
Micah didn’t plan on adopting a dog that day. Volunteering at the shelter, she was used to seeing many dogs come and go, but Mara was different. “I was looking for a Black dog, because they’re not adopted very frequently,” she shared. But what truly captured her heart was Mara’s sweet, puppy smile.
Micah took Mara out for a short break, and something magical happened. “I’ve never said this to any dog, and I worked there for like six months. I said, ‘Oh, do you wanna come home?’ And she put her paw on me and looked up, and I was like, ‘Oh.’” In that instant, Micah knew she had found her companion.
But the decision wasn’t immediate. “I didn’t bring her home that day because my boyfriend at the time, now my fiancé, said, ‘No, we don’t need a dog.’” Still, fate had other plans. Micah couldn’t shake the feeling that Mara was meant to be with her. When she thought Mara was adopted by someone else, she felt a wave of sadness. But that very same day, she brought Mara home.

Since then, Mara has become an irreplaceable part of Micah’s life. Whether it’s exposure training at bustling spots like Whole Foods or quiet moments on the couch, their bond has only grown. “She’s like kind of like my best friend in a way,” Micah admitted. “She gets me up and out of bed every day.”
Micah and Mara’s adventures include beach trips, camping weekends, and plenty of cuddles. “She went from being in the shelter for three months to going camping every weekend, going to a dog beach… Sleeping on a couch,” Micah laughed.
For Micah, Mara is more than just a pet—she’s a true companion. “I think she would just say that she loves me. I think she kinda knows that... I think she would say that I’m her companion.”
Mara’s journey from the shelter to a life filled with love and adventure is a reminder that sometimes, the best friendships are the ones we never saw coming.
